casual intimacy- a study

when the uk was plunged into that very first lockdown, i sought an escape through cinema, specifically films from hollywood’s ‘golden age’- casablanca, singin’ in the rain, roman holiday. lockdown may have lifted, but my love for these films has only grown, shaping me into a different person than i was before them. but what was it about them that kept me coming back? the storylines? the outfits? that wonderful transatlantic accent?
it was all of them.
but mostly, it was the innocence of it all. of course, the storylines are rich and often deal with decidely not innocent topics, and the jokes are very ‘wink wink, nudge nudge’, but there’s a level of simplicity that only comes from the harsh rules of the hays code.
it’s the gentle brush of hands, the long, lingering looks, the innocent ways in which humans interact with each other even while deep in love. it makes my heart swell and amplifies my love for humanity tenfold.

these sketches are the first step to me realising what i want my art to focus on- interpersonal relationships- the artist and the audience, your mother and your father, me and you.
the beautiful concept of casual intimacy and the different ways that it can be expressed. they are also a (very pedestrian) study of cinematography.
so, with all of that said, please enjoy these sketches of specific moments in old hollywood movies that made my heart beat just a little bit faster.
